Are you a first time tax payer? Then here is the quick introduction to 'Refund Banker Scheme', and simple step by step guide to check your refund status online.
The Scheme is commenced from 24th Jan 2007. It is now operational in India for all taxpayers assessed all over India (excluding the Large Taxpayer Units) and for returns processed at Centralized Processing Centre of the Income Tax Department at Bangalore.
State Bank of India (SBI) is the refund banker to the Income Tax Department(ITD).
Your tax refund details are sent to SBI, by the Income tax department. SBI will process the refund, and send you the refund intimation.
While filing your return you can choose any one of the two Refund modes,
ITR Refund Mode Option
ECS (direct credit in the bank account of the taxpayer), and
Paper (by cheque or demand draft.)
How to choose ECS Refund Mode Option in ITR?
If you would like to receive the refund through ECS (faster!), then while filing the Income tax return select the option "deposited directly into your bank account" for D18.
Don't forget to mention your bank A/c number and MICR code of your bank (D15-D17). (it's mandatory)
How to choose Paper Mode Option in ITR?
If you would like to receive the refund through cheque, then while filing the Income tax return select the option "cheque" for D18. Again mention your Bank account number & your address correctly.
If you have not opted for ECS, then your refund will be disbursed by cheque or demand draft.

Do you remember your PAN number? If not, take your PAN card! We need the PAN number to check your refund status.

Go to the table at the bottom of the page, as shown below.
Enter your PAN number & correct assessment year in which you claimed the refund in your Income tax return.
For Example, if you claimed refund in your tax return filed on 30.06.2010, then you should select the Assessment Year as 2010-2011.
Once you submit the form, your Income Tax Refund Status will be displayed, with the following details,
Mode of Payment - Paper/ECS
Reference Number - You can use this reference number to track the refund dispatched.
Status - Paid/Adjusted/Not Sent etc.,

In case you received refund advice but your account is not credited through ECS and the tax refund status shown is “paid”, then you should contact your bank or SBI.
